In reply to Laura Levitzky.

Hi Laura!
My understanding is that Nietzsche refers to three metamorphoses, and therefore four stages. And while he does not describe the first stage - the stage of the spirit - in-depth, he does mention it:

Three metamorphoses of the spirit do I designate to you: how the spirit becometh a camel, the camel a lion, and the lion at last a child.

Many heavy things are there for the spirit, the strong load-bearing spirit in which reverence dwelleth: for the heavy and the heaviest longeth its strength.

What is heavy? so asketh the load-bearing spirit; then kneeleth it down like the camel, and wanteth to be well laden.

What is the heaviest thing, ye heroes? asketh the load-bearing spirit, that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength.

Hope that's helpful!

Where exactly in Thus Spoke Zarathustra does Nietzsche define the first stage you mention - the sheep? Zarathustra's discourse on the metamorphoses of the spirit only refer to three stages : the camel, the lion and the child.

Very true! The ways in which these processes unfold is manifold, and we should resist the temptation to identify our entire self with a single step. Thank you for commenting Izak!

Great article. For me an important thing to realize was that things are a lot more jumbled up in practice. One might be a Lion while perusing a business, a camel in relationships etc. It's important to be aware of which aspects of our lives we find more difficult to break free of and to put our energy into that.
